We holds an exhibition by bamboo craftsman Tanabe Chikuunsai titled “Tradition and Innovation: The World from the First to the Fourth Generation of Chiku’unsai.”
The world of tea, where intellectuals known as bunjin (literati) gathered to engage in literary and artistic pursuits, is deeply connected to bamboo craftsmanship. Tanabe Chiku’unsai I (1877–1937) not only mastered bamboo crafting techniques but also devoted himself to the arts of flower arrangement and sencha tea ceremony. He received full transmission in the Kagetsu-an style of sencha from Junsai Tominaga. Since then, up to the present fourth generation, the Chikunsai family has respected the history of the philosophy and ideas of sencha tea ceremony, continuing to create works that reflect the spirit of the times.
This exhibition showcases the world of successive generations of Chiku’unsai, who have continuously embraced challenges while preserving tradition.
